ABOUT SARANG PALOH
The name Sarang Paloh is a tribute to the history of the town and its people. Ipoh used to be known as “Paloh”. The origin of this name is a symbolic reference to the dams that were constructed along the Kinta River for fishing purposes. These dams were referred to as “Pa-Lo” in the Cantonese dialect and by and by the area was famously known as Paloh. “Sarang” on the other hand, means nest in Bahasa Malaysia, which also symbolises a place of rest.
Formerly being the first Chinese bank in Perak (Bank of Malaya) and subsequently bought over by the Oversea Banking Chinese Corporation (OCBC), the building has withstood the test of time and fire, surviving the World War II. This iconic building is a testament to the wealth derived from tin mining of the local Chinese tycoons. Its Art Deco façade is unique and true to a time of great affluence.
The buildings are also considered architecturally significant as it is made up of three buildings connected side by side. Looking at other heritage buildings, you will find most to be connected back to back.
Founded in 2014, the owners have put in a careful consideration into the materials and methods to restore the building back to its former glory.
SARANG PALOH TRIVIA
- We only use recycled timber and roof tiles salvaged from otherwise unsalvageable shophouses around town.
- Most of our antique furnitures are preloved from local Ipohites or Perakeans
- Where we cannot source for these antiques, we have our own wood sifu to make us custom made furniture using… salvaged timber!
- Lobby is a shop that was run by a goldsmith and jeweller business before it became a pawnshop and subsequently moved to our current neighbour’s shoplot.
- The ex gold smith shop is approximately 100 years old
- The hotel itself is also located in an iconic building named OVERSEA BUILDING. It was owned by the Oversea Chinese Banking Corporation. Its name is in 4 languages on the building façade (Chinese, Malay, Tamil and Arabic)
- The bank building is approximately 90 years old
- The bank was made of two shoplots previously just like Lim Ko Pi (long 120 ft shop house) that was demolished and rebuilt to what it is today
